A view to WordPress 4.0 “Benny”. Version 4.0 is out now since about three weeks. Time for a brief summary.
What’s in it? The WordPress trac lists 714 closed tickets included in Version 4.0. Each ticket represents a new feature, an enhancement or a fix. Many of them you will not even notice.
The best improvement in my opinion is the way the editor handles long posts now. A long awaited “why only now?” feature! Alt last the editor expands automatically when writing and the toolbar is now fixed on scrolling. This I’ve missed a long time. Good bye duplicate scroll bars!
There are some other nice fatures like the new gallery view, the new plugin search page and the language selection on install.
A lot of fixes, OK. But to be honest all the “new” things are improvements or enhancements for existing features. Is this really worth a version jump from 3.x to 4.0? In my opinion “Benny” is more 3.9.3 than 4.0. We saw much more when changing from 2.x to 3.0. But maybe that’s the problem. Maybe we expected too much from a new major version. WordPress 4.0 “Benny” is a nice version and I don’t want to miss the new editor never more. Don’t think about if this version jump is actually entitled. It’s just a number. Welcome Benny. Waiting for 4.0.1…
