Though WordPress more and more shifts to a versatile Content Management System it was originally designed as a blogging system – and obviously it’s still a powerful software for blogging. To simplify the usage of WordPress to post your photos it automatically generates a page for every file you upload to your media library.
So far, so good. The problem with this automatically generated attachment pages is that you can’t turn them off. WordPress always generates them. To verify that just go to the media library in your WordPress admin dashboard, hover over any entry and click the ‘View’ link shown on hover.
Even if you do not want to use these Pages and you nowhere link to them, they still exist and they can be accessed by their automated generated URL.
This is where the smart Attachment Page Remove Plugin comes in. This plugin blocks access to all Attachment Pages and causes an 404 page not found error. There are not settings, just activate the Plugin and it works out of the box. If you want to use Attachment Pages at some point just deactivate this plugin and they are available again.
